Jennifer Howell and the Art of Elysium
Jennifer Howell is the founder of a charity called The Art of Elysium. The Art of Elysium uses art to inspire and bring joy to people in a time of need. They use art in all forms such as: fashion, music, sculpting, photography, painting, drawing, etc. The Art of Elysium takes artists into children's hospitals, Hospice care facilities, homeless shelters, elder care facilities, prisons, veteran's care facilities, special need schools, and inner-city schools. Because of the COVID-19 virus, The Art of Elysium is expanding their charity and is now helping everyone because we are all currently in a time of need and could use some joy and inspiration in our lives. Jennifer Howell and the charity she created helps kids, adults, and everyone in between escape and get away from the hard times they are facing by bringing art and creativity to them and by inspiring them.

More About the Art of Elysium: Why Jennifer Howell Started the Charity.
In her senior year in high school, one of Ms. Howell's dearest friends got diagnosed with leukemia. When they went on a New Year's vacation to Memphis, Ms. Howell's friend pulled her over at one point and told her "Stop pitying me please. If you want to do something, do something for the kids and the people who don't have friends and family at their side." Then he told her a story about when he shared a room with a little kid, about four years old, and said that the child's parents have three or four kids and were working multiple jobs to pay for this their kid's treatment. They weren't able to be with the child so they was left unattended. Not because they were bad parents, but because they had to work extra hard to help him recover. Ms. Howell's friend said to her "I have never spent a night alone at the hospital before, I've had friends and family at my side. If you want to do something, do something for those kids." This was what really gave her the idea to start the Art of Elysium charity. Ms. Howell went back to Los Angeles and got together a group of 23 artists that she went to school with in Boston. They went around saying what type of art they do. After, she went to Children's Hospital Los Angeles and told them that she had a group of artists and that they wanted to volunteer for the kids in the hospital. They told her "Absolutely not. You have to got through a training program and you have to commit 200 hours to be able to volunteer for the kids." She told them that she had working artists and that it was not possible for them to do that. Then, she said that she would go through the training program and bring in the other artists to help. At that point, Ms. Howell had no intention of starting a charity, it was just about volunteering in her friend's name. The hospital called her back in and told her that they loved the artists she was bringing in and they want Ms. Howell to continue, but in order to do so she had to start a Non-Profit. She was set up with an attorney and was able to start the Art of Elysium. Her dear friend passed away in 1998 so he was able to see what Ms. Howell created in his name and because of what he told her.
Quotes About Upstanding From Upstanders
“I believe in the power of creativity. It can transform a hospital room into a totally different world, a new reality outside the confines of an illness. Our imaginations unlock the healing power of art. Artists help the communities we serve access the innate creativity within.”
