Laura Gowen doesn't work for a specific organization. she has started multiple law clinics to help people who are less privileged as her. She could have just done nothing like a lot of people but instead she started a law clinic to educate immigrants on what to do when I.C.E. comes to their door, she went around polling stations and made sure that they weren't turning anyone away, and she started a law clinic to help trans people legally change their name on their drivers licence and birth certificates. that was only the things that she has done recently, she has done a lot more before all of that. all in all she is a pretty awesome person.
I can apply what she does to my life by educating myself on laws and things like that then passing on that information to others because that is really the core of what she does but on a more extreme level. People can do this anytime they want, you can just google it.
What does it take to become an upstander?
What i think it takes to become an upstander is you have a clear understanding of what you are doing, you aren't just like "oh, that person is mean i am going to punch them now." it is when you see a problem with the world and you strive to fix that. To me, being an upstander takes guts, and it is hard to have those guts. like Mother Teresa said "I alone cannot change the world but i can cast a stone and make many ripples"
